Malaysia is located amidst South China Sea in Southeast Asia. The country has an area of 329,750 square km. Malaysia has two separate parts – Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. The southernmost tip is marked by Tanjung Piai, a cape in the state of Johor. The Strait of Malacca is located between Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia.
South China Sea separates two parts of Malaysia. Both the parts have coastal plains that rise to forested hills and mountains. Peninsular Malaysia shares border with Singapore, Thailand, Straits of Malacca, and Indonesian island of Sumatra on the South, North, West, and East respectively. Peninsular Malaysia has stratified rocks, granite, alluvium, and other igneous rocks at various places.
Malaysia has the highest point of elevation (4,095 m) on the eastern side at Mount Kinabalu. East Malaysia is located on the island of Borneo. It shares its border with Brunei and Indonesia on the South. South China Sea surrounds East Malaysia on the West and North, while Sulu Sea surrounds it on the northeast. Nearly 60% of Malaysia comes under East Malaysia. More than half of the country’s whole area is covered by thick tropical forests, predominantly in Sarawak and Sabah.
